The Waelderhaus Tour Guide (or Docent) is an important position at the Kohler Foundation. It directly connects Kohler Foundation to guests and locals though a high quality house museum experience at the Waelderhaus in Kohler. We are currently seeking individuals to lead tours at the Waelderhaus. Paid training. including all the information a guide may need to know, is provided. 

 

 

Position Description

Title: Waelderhaus Docent

Reports to: Waelderhaus Manager, Kohler Foundation, inc.

Basic Function:

Greet guests and visitors to the Waelderhaus graciously and share the history and story of Waelderhaus, while answering questions and pointing out interesting facts regarding the exterior, interior, and background of the building. Docents are required to have the ability to meet and communicate with diverse visitors, be approachable, and engage with guests and colleagues in a kind and professional manner.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Greet visitors warmly and lead tours of the Waelderhaus. Tours are free of charge, and offered daily at 2:00PM, 3:00PM, and 4:00PM (excluding holidays). Time to complete a tour should not exceed fifty (50) minutes, to enable preparation for the upcoming tour.
  • Explain points of interest and answer questions regarding the Waelderhaus accurately, tactfully, and as best you can.
  • Take special care to preserve the Waelderhaus premises. It is the responsibility of the Tour Guide to make certain guests do not touch anything on the tour route. If damage occurs, the docent must report the damage to the Waelderhaus manager.
  • Observe rules and regulations as may be required to ensure a smooth-running operation. Regulations include, but may not be limited to, locking doors and securing the building, cleanliness, closing windows, etc.
  • Address compliments and complaints effectively, enforce guidelines if needed.
  • Assist from time to time with administrative tasks or special events as requested.

Scheduling and Compensation:

  • The current scheduling model is to take a week every month in rotation with the other docents. Docents work a Monday through Sunday schedule, arriving at 1:45 p.m. and departing no later than 5:15 p.m. More hours are required in the month of December during the Gingerbread Festival.
  • The Waelderhaus Manager is to be notified if a docent is unable to work during their scheduled time, and if they are unable to secure a substitute.
  • Docents must record their hours worked on a time slip provided by Kohler Foundation, Inc. and submit completed time slips to the Waelderhaus Manager.
  • 20-30 hours per month, $12.00 per hour

Requirements:

  • Must be able to walk up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 10 pounds.
  • Must be interested in meeting and talking to new people.
