(1914-2005)

Hawkins Bolden, of African American and Native American ancestry, was blinded by a childhood accident. Over a period of many years, he created an installation of figural assemblages and masklike forms in and around his yard in central Memphis, resulting in an environment of what he called "scarecrows" to serve as guardians of his family's garden. He created from found objects ranging from pots and pans, scraps of metal, lids of oil drums and the like.

In 2010, Kohler Foundation gifted ten of Bolden's works to the collection of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Bolden's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and books.
