Watts Tower Scale Model
Larry Harris (b. 1962) created a scale model of Simon Rodia’s Watts Tower over a nine month period beginning in the summer of 1996. Always intrigued by building architecture models from childhood through his education in architecture school, he found model building to be a creative outlet after doing tedious construction drawings in his Houston office. Larry admired the Watts Towers for years, and with the help of archival photos from both Seymour Rosen and Bud Goldstone, he pieced together what he refers to as “a pretty damn accurate rendition of Rodia’s masterpiece”. It has been exhibited in Raleigh, North Carolina for the 2013 exhibit, “Farfetched: Mad Science, Fringe Architecture, and Visionary Engineering”, curated by Roger Manley and Tom Peterson, as well as the John Michael Kohler Arts Center where it resides in the permanent collection.
